Navigating Critical Conversations Around the Israeli/Palestinian Conflict and War

Conflict and war often lead to dehumanization of the people involved and among people who hold diverse ideas or perspectives about who is to blame and what should be done. Using the Israeli/Palestinian conflict as a case study, this session will provide educators strategies for facilitating critical conversations. We’ll learn how to engage with and interpret various sources of information to develop a shared base of knowledge as well as how to frame discussions around different lenses in an effort to gain a fuller understanding of how personal and communal histories can lead to different perspectives.

Exploring Jewish Identity and Culture in Elementary School Details

Addressing antisemitism begins in elementary school by exploring the complexity of Jewish identity. After an introductory mini-lesson reviewing key vocabulary and dates about Jewish history and identity, we’ll model and explore two OJMCHE learning opportunities that are designed to address k-5 standards while introducing Jewish culture and history through active learning projects. Our new Jewish holiday workshop series allows students to understand the unique aspects of Jewish holidays as well as make connections to other cultural celebrations. Additionally, our new traveling suitcase resource utilizes primary source materials to have students learn about Jewish life and culture through an Oregon Jewish immigrant experience.

Structuring a Holocaust Unit Details

Pre-Referral Processes – Considerations before referring children for SPED evaluation

Before referring a school-aged child for an evaluation, the classroom teacher may plan strategies to see if his or her performance improved with simple changes in curriculum or environment. These are called “pre-referral interventions.” At least two pre-referral interventions must be tried and documented.

A referral process in a school is when teachers or parents ask for extra help for a student who is having trouble. The school then works together to find the best way to support the students and help them improve.

Concussion Laws in Oregon

House Bill 4140 (2020) directed the Oregon Department of Education to develop and distribute a form for public education programs to use when a student gets diagnosed with a concussion or other brain injury. Max’s Law (OAR 581-022-0421) was enacted in 2010 and requires Oregon school districts to implement concussion management guidelines for student athletes. Jenna’s Law (2014) extends the intent of Max’s Law to Oregon youth sports and referee organizations. These laws require schools and non-school youth athletic programs to create concussion management policies and procedures, provide and track trainings, restrict play and offer immediate accommodations in order to assure students’ safe return to play and to learning.

Anne Frank, Prejudice, and Colorful Character

This program uses excerpts from Anne Frank’s The Diary of a Young Girl to explore the consequences of prejudice. In our time together, we’ll model ways of using the diary entries as a means of understanding the dehumanizing or flattening outcome of prejudice. We’ll end by co-creating a project drawn from Anne Frank’s diary that metaphorically celebrates the many colorful qualities of our humanity. This session shares a new workshop offered by OJMCHE educators.

Co-Teaching Models for Success

Co-Teaching strives to promote fluid and efficient use of multiple educators within the learning environment. Native Wellness Institute Building and Contributing to a Sustainable Team

The focus of this workshop will be to build and contribute to a sustainable team. We build capacity through games, stories, and group discussions. We have designed it as an intensive outdoor experience rather than an inside presentation style. The curriculum is styled after adventure-based learning. You are encouraged to wear closed toe shoes and clothing to be active in the outdoors. Come join us for two days of emersion in team building strategies through a Native lens.
