Tips and Resources

PowerPoint is a wonderful tool for getting information across to others. Here are some of the hallmarks of great presentations:

  1. Keep it simple: No more than five points per slide. A good slide guides the viewer toward the essence of an idea, rather than listing the idea's attributes. You SAY that. Less is more: Try not to clutter a slide with too much text, graphics, or color.
  2. Make it BIG: Use a minimum of 18 point font size (larger if displayed on a TV connected to a computer). This allows people to see your presentation from the back of the room and limits you to approximately seven lines of text, which keeps it simple (see above).
  3. Use images to organize understanding: Emphasize your points with the use of a graphic (freely available in Office and from the web). However, don't use clip art for clip art's sake. Images should add to the idea being presented rather than distracting from it.
  4. Color combinations and white space: Some background and foreground color combinations are difficult to read. Stick to the basics--high contrast, big, bold print, and plenty of white space.
  5. Try it out: Run through the whole slide show to check for content, timing, and consistency of formats/colors/effects. (Remember Murphy's Law: Try to run the presentation on the machine you'll actually be using.
