Career Technical Education Revitalization Grant $488,432

The Oregon Department of Education has awarded a $488,432 grant to Southern Oregon Education Service District as part of a regional collaborative project between the Grants Pass School District, the Medford School District, and ScienceWorks to revitalize Career Technical Education (CTE) in Southern Oregon. The grant award is a result of a significant partnership by Southern Oregon ESD with school districts, colleges and universities, business, industry, and community partners. This collaborative effort called the College and Career for All Movement (CC4A) is a commitment to provide project-based, hands-on, industry-aligned learning experiences for students in courses leading to certificates and degrees in high-wage, high-demand, high-skill career paths.

SOESD's CTE Regional Coordinator, Brian Robin, credited the creative and collaborative work of Grants Pass High School teacher Brenda Bunge and North Medford High School teacher Kirstie Christopherson for their innovative ideas behind the grant concept. The cutting-edge project provides mobile classrooms containing state of the art manufacturing and design equipment that can travel between schools and events across Southern Oregon, as well as industry-standard equipment in Grants Pass High and North Medford High schools that will dramatically expand student access to quality Career Technical Education experiences in districts across Southern Oregon.

The grant award will fund equipment, materials and coursework impacting multiple CTE programs of study in all the districts in Josephine County, as well as districts in Jackson County. These programs of study are aligned with Southern Oregonís economic development plan, as well as state and national high-wage, high-demand, and high-skill jobs. The grant activities, using mobile labs, have the opportunity to eventually impact the entirety of Southern Oregon, including students in Klamath County.

The grant provides mobile CTE equipment, curriculum, and support to districts that would otherwise lack those opportunities, and promotes hands-on, experiential learning at all grade levels, including multi-level CTE academies where core subject and CTE teachers team teach to show the connection between theory and hands-on applications.

Through partnership with ScienceWorks, children of all ages will engage in out-of-school learning experiences during summer that stimulate interest and provide early learning experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. High school students will simultaneously earn college credit leading to certificates and degrees in targeted career paths.
