STEM Hub Grant Award $125,000

The Oregon Department of Education has awarded $125,00 to Southern Oregon Education Service District to support the regionís Southern Oregon STEM Hub and expand capacity for regional, cross-sector partnerships that promote career paths in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). STEM Hubs are designed to drive individual and community prosperity through increasing access to hands-on learning that connects students with future career opportunities, improving math and science achievement, and increasing post-secondary STEM degrees and certificates.

The STEM Hub grant award also establishes the Southern Oregon STEM Hub as part of the statewide network and qualifies Southern Oregon to receive additional grant funding, such as the $250,000 STEM Innovation Math in Real Life grant that SOESD also received last week on behalf of the region. The Math in Real Life grant provides opportunities for high school teachers and college instructors to design real-world mathematics courses in partnership with business and industry.

The $125,000 STEM Hub grant and the $250,000 STEM Innovation Math in Real Life grant supplement the $585,659 Southern Oregon Promise grant and the $488,432 CTE Revitalization grant also awarded recently to Southern Oregon ESD. The Regional Promise grant provides funds to align dual-credit high school and college courses in Klamath, Jackson, Josephine and Lake counties, and the CTE-R grant funds a regional collaborative project between the Grants Pass School District, the Medford School District, and ScienceWorks to revitalize Career and Technical Education.

These grant awards are a result of Southern Oregonís College and Career for All (CC4A) Movement, a regional collaborative effort between Southern Oregon ESD, school districts, colleges and universities, business, industry, and community partners across Klamath, Jackson and Josephine counties to provide hands-on, project-based learning experiences for students aligned with high-wage, high-demand, and high-skill career paths.

ďThe College and Career for All Movement promotes relevant learning experiences and accelerated college credit that can propel students past high school graduation into college and career paths aligned with our regionís workforce needs, as well as high-wage, high-skill, and high demand jobs across the state and the nation,Ē said SOESD Superintendent Scott Beveridge.
