SOESD / News
Early last Monday morning my mind was swimming with a hundred administrative tasks and concerns when the phone rang. From the other end of the line came the friendly voice of a Director in one of the school districts in our region. “Scott, I just have to call you this morning first thing to tell you about the truly excellent service we recently received from one of your employees…” He went on to describe an example of an ESD employee going above and beyond the call of duty to bring timely, valued service resulting in positive outcomes for schools and students.
This caused me to reflect on the fact that every day there are countless examples of caring, competent service provided by ESD employees and by the hundreds of school staff members serving in the districts of our region. Many of these actions go unrecognized, and even unnoticed except by the recipients of the service. And perhaps that is as it should be. As my grandmother told me many times, “The reward of a good deed is tucked inside the good deed itself.” Still, it seems worthwhile during this very busy time of year to take note of the fact that despite funding challenges and economic uncertainty, a lot of truly remarkable work is happening each and every day in behalf of children we serve.
I want to be sure people are aware of one way Southern Oregon ESD recognizes staff. Three times each year our board formally recognizes the outstanding service and contributions of ESD employees. Recognized employees are invited to attend an SOESD board meeting along with family members and are presented with a certificate and small appreciation gift. These recognition events happen in the October, February and May meetings of the SOESD board. ESD employees can be nominated for such recognition by fellow employees, supervisors, school district staff or members of the community. Nomination forms can be obtained from SOESD program offices or from the SOESD superintendent’s office. The three areas of potential recognition for “above and beyond work” are Performance, Community Service and Innovation.
My thanks to all of those who have dedicated their professional careers to the vitally important work of educating our children and serving our school districts.
